Dear Editor,
Recently, the phenomenon of youngsters losing interest in traditional Chinese art forms, such as dance and tea art, has drawn our attention. Thus, I am writing to explain the underlying reasons for this phenomenon and call for the preservation of our precious Chinese culture.
Evidently, one of the reasons behind this trend is the advancement of technology. Gone are the days when people entertained themselves through art performances or tea drinking with fellow men. Now, digital devices like computers and smartphones allow us to easily access information worldwide. In other words, we have entered an era of globalization. Teens are bombarded with Western culture, which is often depicted as the "better" and more "advanced" culture. They are often influenced and attracted by the visual works of Marvel and DC, which makes them prefer and admire superheroes to traditional Chinese calligraphy. The riveting special effects and fighting scenes excite them, yet the traditional activities cannot. Since the advancement of technology facilitates the transmission of information around the globe, cultural invasion is unavoidable.
Apart from this, the fast-paced life is affecting how people seek entertainment. Usually, traditional art forms require comprehension which takes time. For instance, when you are watching a Chinese opera, you ought to understand the story behind it. Otherwise, you would probably be bored since you may have no clue of what is going on. On the other hand, playing online games or scrolling through Instagram seems far more appealing and entertaining. A simple click of a button can lead to success in a game within a short time, providing an immediate sense of achievement. As traditional art forms take time and effort, fewer people are willing to engage with them. Therefore, fewer people are willing to pursue traditional art forms as entertainment.
As a matter of fact, utilitarianism is another contributing factor. Nowadays, art performers are regarded as low-educated individuals who are unable to earn a satisfactory income. Occupations like doctors, teachers, lawyers and so on are the ones people pursue. As a result, teens dedicate plenty of their time to academic studies and turn a blind eye to art development. This lack of exposure leads to a lack of understanding of conventional art forms. Consequently, this results in the shortage of art performers, hindering the promotion of Chinese culture.
To prevent the vanishment of traditional art forms, the government and relevant organizations should be urged to take action. Social influencers, who are highly popular among youngsters, can be good tools to promote our traditional culture. Social influencers can dress up in traditional Chinese costumes or share some Chinese folktales during their live streams. This could help teens learn more about Chinese traditions and arouse their interest. Hence, promotion always plays a crucial role in preserving our traditional artform and culture.
Traditional art forms are special and unique. It would be a shame if we cannot preserve our culture. We risk losing our recognition of our identity and heritage. Therefore, let’s take actions now to protect our valuable Chinese culture and traditions.
Yours faithfully,
Chris Wong
